We represent an all-volunteer grassroots organization of local activists, community organizations and socially responsible businesses united in raising the profile of the Fair Trade movement and promoting Fair Trade products within the city of Oakland.



WHAT IS A FAIR TRADE TOWN?
Fair Trade Oakland is a member of Fair Trade Towns USA, a national network of towns, cities, and other municipalities demonstrating their commitment to the principles of Fair Trade.



As a Fair Trade Town, our mission is to build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, that foster mutually beneficial relationships between producers and consumers, and that demonstrate the contribution of Fair Trade to a more sustainable world through international commerce.

Lets get this started….again!

After a long hiatus, Fair Trade Oakland campaign is back! We’re excited to continue to work toward establishing Oakland as a Fair Trade Town, and we think we can do it by this fall! Ambitious… We don’t think so; we believe that Oakland is a perfect place for the Fair Trade movement to thrive, and we’re ready to start putting our plans for change into action!

But wait, what does it mean to be a Fair Trade Town?


A Fair Trade Town is a city where businesses and residents make a conscious effort to purchase Fair Trade certified products, and a resolution is passed by the city council supporting Fair Trade in local commerce.


Why is this important?


By organizing our communities at the local level we are able to make a tangible impact on the US market to demand that international justice and equity for producers, artisans, farmers, and workers around the world is a priority of our system of international commerce. When we choose to prioritize ethically and sustainably produced products in Oakland, we’re that much closer to becoming a Fair Trade nation!


Wondering where you come in to play?


Well, we’re looking for like-minded folks from our community to get involved and help us work towards a fairer economic relationship with the global community, and we got loads of ways for you to help! We’ll be holding open meetings beginning in the next couple of weeks, and we’d love to meet you and hear your thoughts about how we can work to make Oakland a Fair Trade town; keep checking our blog, tweets, and Facebook page for updates on when and where we’ll be meeting, as well as more tips on being a Fair Trade consumer in Oakland.
