PRESS RELEASE: Fair Trade Oakland to Host Ice Cream Social on August 10

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, (July 29, 2010) – Fair Trade Oakland, a local branch of the Fair Trade Towns USA campaign, is kicking into high gear! More products than ever are now Fair Trade Certified, and they are turning up in unexpected stores and markets throughout Oakland. The Fair Trade Oakland campaign is celebrating this wide availability of Fair Trade products - which help farmers and workers in the developing world through fair prices, strict labor and environmental standards and community development - by unveiling its “Where to Buy Fair Trade” guide and throwing an ice cream social in partnership with one of the biggest supporters of Fair Trade in the world: Ben & Jerry’s. This open gathering of Fair Trade supporters will be held at the Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop at Oakland’s Jack London Square.  Jack London Square is located at Broadway and 1st Street and can be reached by public transportation.

Fair Trade Towns USA is a national movement to promote Fair Trade, a system that helps farmers and workers lift themselves out of poverty.  Fair Trade is a market-based system guided by principles of fair price, fair labor conditions, direct trade, democratic and transparent organizations, community development and environmental sustainability.  The Fair Trade Towns movement unites Fair Trade supporters by mobilizing and linking activists, retailers, community organizations, media and local government.  In order to become a Fair Trade Town, Oakland must meet specific criteria and establish a Fair Trade presence within the city.

The meeting is open to all community members, including individuals, community organizations, religious congregations and retailers.  Attendees will be able to meet like-minded people and network with the groups and retailers that support Fair Trade, hear about Fair Trade Oakland’s goals and learn about how they can get involved in this exciting campaign.  It’s a great opportunity to get involved in the movement while indulging in some tasty ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s, which has pledged to convert 100% of its ice cream ingredients to Fair Trade Certified™ status by 2013.
